Whiplash and Chiropractic Care
The neck can be badly injured when the head is moved suddenly into flexion then extension or vice versa. A good example that is easy to understand is a motor vehicle injury where the car hits a solid object and is brought to an abrupt halt.
The head (which weighs 12 pounds in weight) is thrown forward before our muscles can stop it (flexion). When the head has moved as far as it can go on the neck it will rebound against the ligaments and soft tissues and then is thrown back the other way towards the head rest (this is why head rests were invented to prevent the head moving too far into extension and damaging the spinal cord). This injury is called whiplash and is often seen following even a minor motor vehicle accident, a step when descending the stairs or in contact sports such as rugby.
Chiropractic can help whiplash which is essentially a joint and soft tissue problem.
Chiropractors specialize in the joints of the spine, the soft tissues that hold the spine in position and nerves that exit the spine. Who is better trained to take care of you when you have this problem? Call us for an appointment now. |
