Headaches and Chiropractic Care

Headaches are a common complaint that patients go to a chiropractor for. Headaches are common but they are not normal. Nor is it normal to have to take pain relief medication to avoid headaches. The most common cause of headaches is dehydration. Are you drinking at least 8 glasses (250mL glass) daily – more if you exercise and sweat?

The second most common cause is a cervicogenic headache. This results from irritation of the nerves of the upper cervical (upper neck) spine. This irritation is called a subluxation. It can cause headaches, dizziness, blurred vision, neck and shoulder tension and reduced ability to move your neck. A simple test to see whether you have reduced range of motion of your neck is to get someone to watch you from behind while you rotate your head to one side then the other. If one side doesn’t move as much this is a significant finding and can indicate the presence of a vertebral subluxation.
